About this course
This course equips Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) with the knowledge and practical skills to recognize, protect, and promote the fundamental rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. Through historical context, core values, legal frameworks, and actionable strategies, learners will gain the tools to ensure dignity, inclusion, and legal compliance in all support settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Define fundamental rights and explain their importance for individuals with developmental disabilities
- Describe the historical evolution from institutionalization and discrimination to modern inclusion and self-determination
- Identify and explain the seven foundational values and nine fundamental rights as outlined in Maryland regulations
- Recognize and apply best practices for supporting choice, control, and self-determination in daily life
- Distinguish between permitted and prohibited restrictive procedures, and understand the approval process for any rights restrictions
- Explain the role and composition of standing committees in safeguarding individual rights
- Demonstrate how to report abuse, neglect, or rights violations, including available channels and protections for reporters
