About this course
This course equips Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) with the knowledge, skills, and ethical frameworks needed to promote community integration and inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities. Learners will explore the roles of natural and community supports, the importance of family engagement, ethical behavior management, positive support strategies, and ways to foster independence and self-advocacy.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Define community integration and inclusion and explain their significance
- Differentiate between natural supports and community supports with examples
- Describe the critical role of family and other natural supports
- Apply strategies to build and maintain natural supports based on individual preferences
- Explain the components and ethical requirements of behavior support plans (BSPs)
- Recognize appropriate and inappropriate use of psychotropic medications
- Document behavioral incidents accurately using the ABC format
