About this course
This course equips Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) with essential knowledge and practical strategies to understand, assess, and positively influence behavior. Learners will explore key behavioral principles, reinforcement strategies, and ethical considerations to foster safer, more supportive environments and promote skill development for individuals they support.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Define and recognize observable behaviors, including adaptive and maladaptive types
- Distinguish between voluntary and involuntary behaviors and identify their causes
- Describe and apply the ABCs of behavior (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) to real-world scenarios
- Differentiate between positive and negative reinforcement and identify appropriate uses for each
- Select and implement effective reinforcement schedules to support behavior change
- Apply differential reinforcement strategies (DRI, DRA, DRO) to reduce challenging behaviors
- Explain extinction and its challenges, including extinction bursts
