About this course
This course prepares direct support staff and supervisors at IDD and human-services providers to understand and apply the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Part one covers the ADA's history and structure: the five titles, who is protected, and the broad definition of disability restored by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. Part two covers Title I employment: reasonable accommodation, undue hardship, the interactive process, and the confidentiality rules every supervisor must know. Part three covers Titles II and III: public services and public accommodations, effective communication and auxiliary aids and services, service animals, and mobility devices. Part four covers Olmstead v. L.C. and the integration mandate — why unjustified segregation is discrimination and what community integration means in IDD services. Part five brings the ADA into daily direct-support work: supporting individuals' rights in the community, accessibility problem-solving, and complaint avenues. Part six connects the ADA to person-centered practice and to your agency's own obligations as an employer and service provider. Suitable for new-hire orientation and annual refresher training, including state DD-agency ADA training requirements.
