About this course
This course equips Direct Support Professionals in New York to recognise, protect and promote the fundamental rights of the people they support. Learners work through the history that produced today's protections — including Willowbrook and the consent decree that followed — the values behind rights-based support, and what upholding rights looks like in daily practice: choice and control, privacy, dignity, relationships and community membership. New York's framework is named throughout: the rights of people receiving services in OPWDD-certified settings under 14 NYCRR Part 633 (Protection of Individuals Receiving Services in Facilities and Services Operated and/or Certified by OPWDD), the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, and the incident and abuse reporting duties that go with them, including the Vulnerable Persons' Central Register at 1-855-373-2122.
