About this course
This course teaches Direct Support Professionals the knowledge behind crisis prevention and verbal de-escalation in IDD and human-services settings. Learners study behavior as communication and the six-phase crisis cycle (baseline, trigger, escalation, peak, de-escalation, recovery); person-centered prevention through environment, routine, and choice; early recognition of escalation, trauma responses, and medical or sensory causes that must be ruled out; evidence-based verbal de-escalation skills drawn from positive behavior support and the Project BETA consensus guidelines; safe response when de-escalation is not enough, including prohibited practices and why restrictive interventions are last-resort and regulated; and post-incident debriefing, documentation, and relationship repair. This is the online knowledge component of a blended curriculum; the in-person skills-practice component is delivered by a qualified provider instructor. This course does not authorize or train any physical intervention technique.
